SEER2 Northern Virginia

Right Now Is The BEST Time in History to Replace Your AC System

Here’s why…the federal government is changing how air conditioning efficiency is rated effective January 1, 2023. Here in Northern Virginia, we fall under the Southeast Region Regulations, which state all air conditioning systems purchased in this region that do not meet the SEER2 requirements cannot be installed after January 1, 2023.

While this federal government regulation change does not go into effect until January 1, 2023, we want our customers to be aware of the change.

1. HVAC costs will go up

The higher efficiency standard has required HVAC manufacturers to redesign, retool and purchase new production machinery. The new HVAC equipment will have bigger coils, be more significant in size, utilize more steel, copper, and aluminum, plus require more costly components.

2. HVAC Replacement cost will never be lower than right now

It’s safe to say that the cost of a new air conditioning system will never be lower than right now. If you have concerns about the health of your equipment, now is an excellent time to consider a replacement.

3. Fines will be imposed on HVAC contractors

The guidelines for our region prohibit installing an AC system manufactured before 2023. There will be fines for installing a system that does not meet the SEER2 guidelines and potential loss of license to contractors. Contractors refusing compliance with new DOE equipment standards are subject to legal penalties. For more information, please visit regulations.gov.

4. Repairs to Existing Heating and Cooling Systems in 2023
The 2023 requirements only apply to the installation of new HVAC systems, and existing systems will not require replacement if they are already installed and functioning. However, you will no longer be able to replace just a heating or cooling system; if either fails, the entire unit will require replacement.
