How to Avoid the Common Clogged Drain

Clogged Drain

Do you know what really goes down your kitchen drain?

When “Out of sight, out of mind” is the plumbing practice used by homeowners, that can create a problem that typically grows into a big pluming problem!

Your kitchen and bathroom drains are not black holes that vanish into a void of space.  They are connected to very small pipes with lots of turns and twists that get clogged more easily than you might think.  This is where many homeowners fail right from the start.  The “out of sight, out of mind” method of plumbing practice can lead to messy mishaps and costly plumbing repairs.  Fixing an issue yourself can also lead to some huge plumbing problems down the line.

The Clogged Kitchen Sink Drain

If you don’t have a garbage disposal, then you need to be careful what you wash down the kitchen sink.  People sometimes forget what they can and cannot put down the kitchen drain.  Professional plumbers have amazing stories of what they have found stuffed into the drain pipes.  Remember, if you don’t have a garbage disposal, don’t wash bones, grease, vegetables, rice or pasta down the drain and you’ll avoid future plumbing problems.

Here are a few ways that can help you avoid a slow or clogged drain:

  • Don’t pour grease down the drain
  • If you have a garbage disposal make sure everyone in your household uses it
  • Use a drain screen

Liquid Drain Cleaner is Not a “Cure All”

Although, I’m guilty of trying this one myself—using a liquid drain cleaner and other similar toxic chemicals can have an adverse effect.  These liquids will eat through anything, including some drain pipes.  So, when you pour a bottle of drain cleaner down your pipes to remove a particularly stubborn clog, hope that it cures your plumbing problems fast. Otherwise, you could have an even bigger mess on your hands…a mess that will have you rushing to grab a mop and calling a plumber.

If your drains are slow or completely clogged a professional plumber can clear the drain. It’s the best way to clear your drain and not cause potential damage to your plumbing system. Call M.E. Flow at (571) 350-3183 today.
