High water use?

The culprit could be a leaking toilet, waterline, or even a leaking faucet and shower heads. If you have a leaking toilet it could leak up to a gallon of water a minute! So, how do you know if your leaking / running toilet is the culprit of your high water bill or if you have a leak in your waterline?

When your water bill jumps hundreds of dollars it’s definitely an indicator that there is a problem with your plumbing somewhere. But how do you know if it’s the toilets in your home causing your high water use? According to Conserve H2o, a leaking toilet is typically the culprit of the spike in your water use and it’s usually easy to identify before calling a plumber.

The first thing you should do is check all the toilets in the house–and don’t forget the one that’s not used that often.

  • Listen for the sound of running or trickling water
  • Open up the back of the tank and check to see it it’s refilling
  • Look in the bowl and see is there is water moving

If none of the signs are noted, it’s recommend to do one more test to rule out a leaking toilet as the culprit of your high water use. Conserve H2o suggest dropping a dye tablet or 10 drops of food coloring into the tank. Wait 10-15 minutes, then look into the bowl of the toilet. If you see the colored water in your bowl, you have a leak.

If you do have a leaking toilet, and it’s not one that is used often, you can turn off the water feed at the base of the toilet until you have the toilet fixed.
