Signs You Need Air Conditioning Repair

In some cases, it will be abundantly obvious your AC system needs professional attention, especially if your unit is failing to turn on or refuses to produce cold air when you need it most. In other instances, your AC unit may technically work but may also exhibit signs that something is wrong.

You should reach out to our air conditioning repair technicians in Northern Virginia if you notice any of the following warning signs:

  • No cool airflow. If you are not feeling any cool air coming out of your vents, your AC unit likely requires serious repairs. A lack of cool airflow can be caused by a variety of issues, with one of the most common problems being a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is what helps to transfer heat from inside the home to the exterior, so if it has leaked out, the air conditioner will no longer be able to maintain its temperature. Another potential cause of a lack of cool airflow could be a faulty compressor. A compressor powers much of an air conditioning system, and if it has failed, it will not be able to provide enough energy for your AC unit to properly circulate cold air. Dust and dirt buildup on filters is another common issue that can lead to poor cooling efficiency. When dust builds up on filters, it obstructs airflow which prevents cold air from being circulated throughout the house properly. This issue should be addressed as soon as possible due to its ability to reduce energy efficiency. It can also cause damage to other parts such as evaporator coils if left unchecked for too long.
  • Weak or no airflow. The same potential causes of a lack of cool airflow, such as a failing compressor or clogged vents, can also lead to a complete lack of airflow at any temperature. These problems will worsen if nothing is done, so it is best to get your system checked immediately before further damage can occur.
  • Strange smells. If you notice unpleasant odors coming from your unit, get your system checked immediately. The smell could indicate the presence of mold or burned-out wire insulation.
  • Leakage around your unit. Leakage around your unit is frequently a sign of a much bigger problem with your AC unit. Your unit may be leaking because of a worn-out or damaged seal. The seal is responsible for creating a tight fit between the condenser coils and the walls, preventing any refrigerant fluid from escaping. If this seal wears down over time or incurs any damage, then it will no longer be able to provide an adequate barrier, and refrigerant fluid may begin leaking out. Left unaddressed, this will eventually result in a lack of cool airflow. Leakage may also be the result of cracked pipes or hoses. These are responsible for carrying the refrigerant throughout the system, and they can become damaged due to corrosion over time or from excessive pressure. Even improper installation can lead to leakage. If an inexperienced technician does not tighten all screws and connections properly, then it can create gaps from which refrigerant can escape. It is important that anyone who works on your air conditioning unit is experienced and qualified to avoid these and other issues.

Frequently Asked Questions about Air Conditioning Repair

How Important Is Size When Choosing an Air Conditioner?

Choosing an appropriately sized air conditioner for your home, apartment, or business is crucial. If the unit is too large, it will cycle on and off rapidly and waste energy. If the unit is too small, it will struggle to keep the structure sufficiently cool. Both of these dynamics will result in higher energy bills and significant wear and tear on the system. The square footage of the area should be measured accurately before making a purchase, as this will ensure that the selected unit has adequate power for cooling without overworking itself. We are familiar with all major models and can help you make the right choice.

What Is Causing My Air Conditioner to Freeze Up?

Refrigerant leaks, faulty compressors, dust and dirt buildup, corroded evaporator coils, clogged condensate drains, and inadequate insulation around ducts can all cause an air conditioner to freeze up. Our experts can quickly diagnose the issue and get to work on a fix that will last.

How Do I Determine If There Is an Existing Warranty on My AC System?

The first thing you want to look for is the manufacturing date. This is usually located on a label affixed to the unit. In most cases, if the date is less than five years old, there is a chance the warranty still applies. However, this depends on whether you have adhered to maintenance and manufacturer guidelines.

What Should I Look for Before Calling for Service?

Always check the breakers, filters, and float switches. If you have a battery in your thermostat, you will also want to check this. If your air conditioner has started malfunctioning following a power surge or outage, try resetting your unit from the breaker. These are the most common culprits.
