Signs Your Northern Virginia Home Needs Drain Cleaning

To keep your home's drains in optimal condition, it is in your best interest to have them professionally cleaned by a professional at least once a year. This will help reduce the chances of slow-draining pipes, clogged drains, and other serious plumbing issues. There are some instances where it is wise to schedule more immediate cleaning, however, particularly when you start to encounter clogs and other worrying signs of plumbing problems.

You may need our drain cleaning services in Northern Virginia if you notice any of the following warning signs:

  • Slow-draining water or constantly clogging plumbing fixtures. Slow drainage and clogs can be caused by a variety of factors, but the most common are hair, soap scum, food waste buildup, and tree roots that have infiltrated the pipe system. Hair is a major culprit when it comes to clogged drains, as it can easily build up and form a solid mass that blocks water flow. Soap scum may also be to blame, as its greasy nature allows it to stick to the sides of pipes and create stubborn buildups over time. Food waste, including grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, and potato peels, can easily accumulate and eventually cause blockages. Additionally, tree roots are known to find their way into pipes through cracks or leaks, which will then lead to slow-draining pipes. Another possible cause for clogging in drain lines is the calcification of pipes due to hard water. Hard water contains high levels of minerals such as magnesium and calcium, which can build up inside pipes over time and restrict water flow. In some cases. This buildup may be so severe that it completely blocks the pipe. Whatever the cause, slow-draining water or total blockages indicate that something needs to be fixed quickly before more significant damage occurs.
  • Unpleasant odors coming from your pipes or drains. Nasty smells emerging from your pipes or drains are typically the result of buildups of bacteria, food particles, grease, soap scum, and other debris accumulating in your pipes. These deposits can create an environment for odor-producing bacteria to grow and thrive, leading to foul, musty odors throughout your home. Seeping sewage triggered by sewer line blockages can also generate these unpleasant smells.
  • Gurgling noises coming from your pipes or drains. Gurgling sounds signal a major blockage somewhere in your pipes. When food waste, hair, soap scum, grease, tree roots, or foreign objects block a pipe, they prevent water from flowing freely, forcing it to move around it and consequently causing gurgling sounds as pockets of air are released and sucked back in.

How We Clean and Unclog Drains

At M.E. Flow, our team of highly trained technicians uses only the most up-to-date industry tools and techniques to deliver results-oriented drain cleaning services in Northern Virginia. When you request our help, we will arrive in a fully stocked truck prepared to take on whatever is causing your slow drainage or blockage. After diagnosing the problem, we will walk you through what needs to be done and why.

Our drain cleaning solutions include:

  • Hydro jetting. Hydro jetting is a powerful and efficient method of drain and pipe cleaning. It involves the use of an extremely high-pressure stream of water that is blasted through a specialized hose with a nozzle attached to the end. The pressure created by this water blast is strong enough to break apart even stubborn blockages, clogs, and debris while still being safe for pipes and drains. It can also be used to clean entire drain systems.
  • Snaking the drain. Also known as “drain snaking,” snaking a drain is a process that involves inserting a long, flexible steel cable with an auger head on one end into the pipe. The auger is able to reach deep into the clog and break it up, allowing water to flow freely again. We use a special tool called an auger head to insert the steel wire into the pipe until it reaches the obstruction. Once there, we crank a handle at the top of the auger, causing its spiral blade to spin against the blockage and break it up into smaller pieces that can pass through the pipe more easily. Our technicians may also use additional tools such as blades or brushes attached to the tip of the auger's head to further break up and remove stubborn clogs. This technique can be used in any type of plumbing system but is most commonly used to clear residential kitchen and bathroom sinks.
  • Video camera inspection of pipes. Our team can safely insert a specialized camera into your pipes to inspect their interiors as well as diagnose and troubleshoot blockages and other plumbing problems. The video camera can typically travel hundreds of feet and can work either by sending a live feed directly to one of our technicians or by recording onto an onboard storage device for later review. To ensure high accuracy and visibility, the video cameras are waterproof and come with adjustable lighting levels that make it easier to see any cracks, corrosion, or other signs of damage inside the pipe. In addition to being used to detect issues, our video camera inspections can also help verify that our hydro jetting or drain snaking services have been performed optimally. By inserting the camera into the pipe after an initial round of hydro jetting or drain snaking is complete, we can check for debris removal as well as look for any potential clogs or blockages that may remain.
