The Importance of Water Quality

Water Quality

WHAT IS WATER QUALITY AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?

First, a clear understanding of what water quality actually means is necesary. According to the United States Geological Survey,

Water quality can be thought of as a measure of the suitability of water for a particular use based on selected physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. To determine water quality, scientists first measure and analyze characteristics of the water such as temperature, dissolved mineral content, and number of bacteria. Selected characteristics are then compared to numeric standards and guidelines to decide if the water is suitable for a particular use.”

In North Virginia, this is governed by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. They are responsible for carrying out State Water Control and meeting the federal obligations for the Clean Water Act.

Unfortunately, even with all of the state and federal government rules and regulations, the quality of water that enters your home is not the best at all. This water that is used for drinking, bathing, and cleaning can not only be harmful to your health and well-being, it can also damage your home’s equipment and appliances that use the water like washing machines, clothes washers, water heaters, and even the plumbing infrastructure.

The costs associated with poor water quality are endless. It goes beyond the replacement of appliances and clothes, especially when factoring in doctors visits because of health issues and the ever-rising cost of bottled water. What can you do about it?
