How to Prevent Hard Water From Damaging Your Home

If you live in Lake Frederick or other areas with hard water in Northern Virginia, then you know what a struggle it can be to keep your home looking good.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…that has never been truer than if you have hard water in your home!

In this article we will provide a great tip to help you keep your home looking good and protect it from the damaging effects of scale build-up.

What is hard water? According to the USGS Water Science School water hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hard water is not a health risk, it’s more of a hassle because the mineral deposits left behind are hard to clean and over time the scale build-up can cause damage to your water using appliances…including  your tankless water heater!

How to Fix Hard Water? You have to install some sort of a water conditioning system…like a Water Softener. There is other technology out there too that provides Scale Prevention and Water Filtration and does not require any salt!

Which water treatment system is right for you? There are several factors to consider when choosing a water softener — it’s best to consult with a plumbing company that specializes in dealing with hard water. At my home in Lake Frederick, we opted for the salt-free Scale Prevention and Water Filtration system. The house is on a slab and the drainage was not ideal…it was possible…but not ideal for a traditional water softener.

How do you know if you have hard water in your home? I knew I had hard water as soon as I met my neighbors! That’s what good neighbors do…they tell you what you need to know! But really… if you have hard water it will be evident with a few of these indicators:

  • Film on glass shower doors and walls
  • Hair may feel sticky and look dull
  • You will use more detergent and soap
  • Spots appear on dishes and drinking glasses when dry

Hope this article gave you some insight and solutions to fixing your hard water. If left untreated the hard water will create more plumbing repairs too.
